Dan Barry

To begin, I seek out subject matter that contains some innate beauty – the reflection of a bridge over a river, for example. The composition must focus on, and be limited to the part of that subject that best illustrates the beauty I recognize in it. Light, shade and shadow create the mood: perhaps sharp highlights and deep crisp shadows, or alternatively diffuse, foggy and vague? Finally color is where the piece takes on its own creative mystery and reality. The subject becomes my own as my vision is overlaid, and the rich oil hues react with one another, stroke upon stroke.

The piece may resemble the subject that inspired it, but what I am after is the expression of what I see within the subject, not a photographically accurate portrayal.
